Unlocking The Power of Ayurveda: Simple Healthy Living Strategies

Ayurveda is an ancient holistic healing tradition that has been around for centuries. It is
based on the principle that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the
body, mind, and spirit. The practice emphasizes eating in accordance to your individual
needs based on your dosha type, or your unique combination of physical, mental, and
emotional characteristics. Hi! I’m Dr. Shivani Gupta and in this blog post, we will explore the basics of Ayurveda and provide simple tips for eating in accordance with your
individual dosha type.

What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a form of alternative medicine native to India that has been practiced for
thousands of years. It is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate
balance between the body, mind, and spirit. The practice emphasizes creating harmony
through diet, lifestyle changes, stress management techniques, yoga postures (asanas),
herbal medicine (ayurvedic herbs), aroma therapy (aromatherapy), massage therapy
(abhyanga), breathing exercises (pranayama) and meditation.

The Three Doshas
Ayurveda recognizes three distinct doshas – vata, pitta and kapha – which are derived
from five elements in nature – space (ether), air, fire, water and earth. Each dosha carries
its own set of characteristics — physical traits like shape or size as well as psychological
attributes such as temperaments or patterns of behavior — which can be used to identify
an individual’s dominant dosha type.

Vata – Vata energy is characterized by lightness and movement; it governs creativity and flexibility. People with predominantly Vata characteristics tend to have thin frames with dry skin; they are creative thinkers who are easily distracted.

Eating for Vata: To keep Vata balanced, eat warm foods that are easy digest; focus on
cooked vegetables rather than raw ones; choose sweet fruits over sour ones; opt for
warm spices like turmeric rather than pungent ones like black pepper; consume small
amounts of nut butter s regularly; avoid caffeine alcohol processed foods.

Pitta – Pitta energy is energetic and passionate; it governs digestion and metabolism.
People with predominantly Pitta characteristics tend to have strong builds with oily skin;
they are competitive thinkers who can be quick-tempered if pushed too far.

Eating for Pitta: To keep Pitta balanced, choose cooling foods such as cucumbers
lettuce; opt for sweet fruits such as apples bananas over sour citrus fruits; use spices such
as ginger cumin rather than hot spicy ones like cayenne pepper; avoid fried foods acidic beverages excessive amounts oils dairy products.

Kapha – Kapha energy is calm but powerful; it governs structure and stability. People
with predominantly Kapha characteristics tend to have solid frames with soft skin; they
are peaceful thinkers who can be slow to react but determined in their pursuits once
motivated.

Eating for Kapha: To keep Kapha balanced, choose warm pungent flavors such as garlic ginger over sweet flavors; opt for cooked vegetables cooked grains over heavy starches; focus on lighter proteins such as fish tofu rather than heavier meats eggs cheese; avoid cold foods heavy desserts carbonated beverages excessive amounts salt fats sugars.

What’s Your Dosha?
Although everyone possesses all three doshas within them in varying ratios depending
upon their genetic makeup or environment influences throughout life , typically one
dosha tends to dominate an individual’s temperament or character traits more than others
do . Knowing your dominant dosha can help you better tailor your diet according to its
specific needs. To find your Dosha type check out https://shivanigupta.com/dosha-quiz. Once you know your Dosha type, you can begin to practice healthy eating habits
